© 2016 Indian Journal of Anaesthesia | Published by Wolters Kluwer Medknow Ever since Aaron Bunsen Lerner isolated melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) from pineal glands of cattle in 1958, the hormone has been found to have several uses in humans. Endogenous melatonin is well recognised for its role in regulation of the circadian rhythm.[1] Exogenous melatonin has been studied for various indications in anaesthesia such as hypnosis, anxiolysis, sedation and analgesia. It has also been used effectively for the prevention of emergence agitation and delirium in postoperative as well as intensive care unit patients. Melatonin’s antioxidative, immunomodulatory and cardioprotective properties have found utility in a variety of surgical procedures such as organ transplantation, liver resection and cardiovascular surgery.[2-5]

Radiosensitizing effects of melatonin on radiation induced chromosomal aberration in G2-lymphocytes of breast cancer patients
Background: Radiotherapy is regarded as a standard treatment modality in breast cancer (BC). Radiation causes cellular damage both in cancer and normal cells by inducing DNA-damage and chromosomal aberrations (CA). Different agents were used for ameliorating effects of radiation, mainly antioxidants such as melatonin. Melatonin shows oncostatic properties on human BC. The aim of this study was ...
متن کاملP-20: Determination of Effect of Melatonin on In vitro Maturation of Bovine Oocytes under Heat Stress
Background: Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a multifunctional molecule that mediates several circadian and seasonal processes in animal reproduction. Melatonin and its metabolites are antioxidants and free radical scavengers. Furthermore, melatonin has been shown to act as an indirect antioxidant, and it is able to increase the activity of glutathione synthesis, and many others dire...
متن کاملMelatonin: A therapeutic potential for the neurohormone in gallbladder disorders
In humans, N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine (melatonin), a neurohormone widely found in plants and animal sources, is synthesized from serotonin primarily by the pineal gland. However, it it is also produced in a number of other areas, e.g. the gastrointestinal tract. Melatonin regulates various biological and physiologic body functions and its role in the regulation of circadian rhythms, particula...
متن کاملDevelopmental effect of light deprivation on synaptic plasticity of rats' hippocampus: implications for melatonin
Objective(s): There are few reports have demonstrated the effect of a change-in-light experience on the structure and function of hippocampus. A change-in-light experience also affects the circadian pattern of melatonin secretion. This study aimed to investigate developmental effect of exogenous melatonin on synaptic plasticity of hippocampus of light deprived rats. Materials and Methods: The ...
متن کاملP-169: Melatonin and Fertility
Background: Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. It helps regulate other hormones and maintains the body’s daily rhythm, telling us when to fall asleep and when to wake up. Ever since we developed electricity and the lightbulb, we have been decreasing our body’s secretions of melatonin by being exposed to bright light after it is dark. Jet lag, shift work and poor v...
